Abstract

Poli(mliječna kiselina) ili PLA je biorazgradljiv i kompostabilan polimer. Dobiva se iz obnovljivih izvora poput kukuruza ili šećerne trske. Zbog svojih zavidnih karakteristika vrtoglavom brzinom postaje izrazito konkurentan materijal na tržištu. Svojstva PLA moguće je prilagoditi ovisno o primjeni, zbog toga je upotreba PLA izrazito široka i raznolika. PLA se primjenjuje u raznim granama medicine, u tkivnom inženjerstvu, ortopediji, u sustavu za dostavu lijekova, kardiovaskularnim implantatima, kao materijal za izradu medicinske opreme i dr. PLA je dobra alternativa petrokemijskoj plastici. Zbog sve većeg problema zagađenja okoliša plastikom dobivenom iz nafte i njezinih derivata, te zbog ograničenih izvora nafte, potrebno je usmjeriti pozornost na materijale poput PLA, pogodnije za okoliš i dobivene iz obnovljivih izvora. Cilj ovog preglednog rada je opisati svojstva poli(mliječne kiseline), te naglasiti široku biomedicinsku primjenu i posebnosti polimera s ciljem uočavanja važnosti daljnjeg proučavanja i primjene istog.

Abstract (english)

Poly(lactic acid) or PLA is a biodegredable and compostable polymer. It is produced from renewable resources such as corn or sugar cane. Due to its enviable characteristics, it quickly became an extremely competitive material on the market. Properties of PLA can be modified depending on the application which is why it is widely and diversely used. PLA is applied in various fields of medicine, tissue engineering, orthopedics, drug delivery systems, cardiovascular implants, as material for the production of medical equipment etc. It is also a good alternative for petrochemical plastics. Because of the rising issue of plastic pollution obtained from oil and its derivates, and because of the limited sources of oil, it is necessary to focus the attention to materials such as PLA that are environmentally friendly and produced from renewable sources. The goal of this review paper is to describe the properties of poly(lactic acid) but also to state and explain its rich usage in biomedicine and the positive influence it carries along, with the purpose of understanding the importance of further study and application of it.
