Abstract

Infekcije uzrokovane bakterijama jedan su od glavnih razloga smrtnosti u bolnicama diljem cijelog svijeta. Bakterijske infekcije najčešće se prenose preko medicinskih uređaja te kontaktom s kvakama na vratima, slavinama za vodu, kadama i telefonima. Jednom kada se bakterije vežu na površinu, dolazi do njihove kolonizacije i nastaje zreli biofilm. Zbog toga je neophodno razviti površine ili premaze za površine koje će spriječiti njihov rast. Važno je koristiti takve koncentracije antimikrobnih tvari koje će ubiti patogene, ali neće negativno utjecati na ljudska bića. Metali i nanočestice metalnih oksida, npr. srebro (Ag), titanijev dioksid (TiO2) i cinkov oksid (ZnO) obećavajući su agensi koji se u kombinaciji s određenim polimerom široko koriste za antimikrobno djelovanje. Ako su čestice antimikrobnih tvari nanoveličina, njihova velika površina omogućuje im dobru interakciju s mikrobnom stanicom. Posebno je važno koristiti antimikrobne tvari za sprečavanje rasta bakterija na medicinskim uređajima kao što su kateteri i implantati. Problem obraštanja bakterijama prisutan je i u industriji hrane, električnim i elektroničkim uređajima te tekstilnoj industriji. U ovom je radu prikazan pregled polimernih materijala s antimikrobnim djelovanjem. Prikazane su glavne karakteristike takvih polimernih materijala te su objašnjena svojstva koja se dobiju njihovom pripremom s Ag, TiO2 i ZnO. Također su dani primjeri upotrebe nanokompozita u pakiranju hrane, tekstilu te medicini.

Abstract (english)

Infections caused by bacteria are one of the main causes of death in hospitals worldwide. Bacterial infections are most commonly transmitted via medical equipment and through contact with door handles, water taps, bathtubs and telephones. Once bacteria bind to a surface, their colonization ensues and a mature biofilm is formed. That is why it is essential to develop surfaces or surface coatings that will prevent their growth. It is important to use concentrations of antimicrobial substances that kill pathogens, but are not harmful to humans. Metals and nanoparticles of metal oxides, e.g. silver (Ag), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) in combination with certain polymers show promising antimicrobial effects. If particles of antimicrobial substances are nanosized, their large surface allows good interaction with a microbial cell. It is of special importance to use antimicrobial substances to prevent bacterial growth on medical equipment like catheters and implants. Bacterial fouling is a problem present in the food industry, in electric and electronic devices and in the textile industry. This paper presents an overview of polymer materials with an antimicrobial effect. The main characteristics of such polymer materials are present in this work. Also, the properties obtained by preparing them with Ag, TiO2, and ZnO are explained. Examples of the use of nanocomposites in food packaging, textiles and medicine are also provided.
