Abstract

Polimerni materijali imaju veliku primjenu u današnjem društvu. Radi takve raširene primjene, potražnje i potrošnje, dolazi do nastanka znatne količine polimernog otpada. Problem se javlja kod neadekvatnog zbrinjavanja polimernog otpada jer velike količine mogu naštetiti i narušiti ravnotežu u prirodi. U današnje se vrijeme više pridaje pažnja proizvodnji i upotrebi materijala koji imaju mogućnost biorazgradnje. Međutim, ukoliko nije moguće postići biorazgradnju kod korištenih materijala, bitno je pronaći ekonomski i ekološki povoljne postupke zbrinjavanja polimernog otpada koji se ne može samostalno razgraditi. Polistiren je jedan od polimernih materijala čija je potrošnja jako velika i često se koristi te je radi toga veliki izvor otpada. U ovom radu opisani su načini zbrinjavanja otpada polistirena, od prikupljanja do mogućih načina recikliranja. Velika je prednost što se polistiren može reciklirati raznim postupcima: mehanički, kemijski, a moguće je i energijsko recikliranje.
Cilj ovog rada je upoznati se s primjerenim postupcima zbrinjavanja polistirenskog otpada, mogućim metodama recikliranja te primjenom recikliranih produkata što doprinosi održivom razvoju, očuvanju okoliša i ekonomskoj dobiti. Reciklirani polistiren može se koristiti kao pjena za pakiranje gdje služi za zaštitu proizvoda, kao labavi ispun koji služi kao punjenje pakiranja, kao zamjena za drvo – gradnja kuća, izrada namještaja, a zanimljiva je i njegova primjena kao sorbenta koji adsorbira molekule različitih tvari iz raznih medija. Reciklirani polistiren koristi se još za izolaciju zgrada te kao sirovina za proizvodnju nekih novih polimernih materijala, npr. kompozita.

Abstract (english)

Polymer materials are of great use in today's society. Due to such widespread use, demand and consumption, a considerable amount of polymer waste is generated. The problem arises with inadequate disposal of polymer waste as large amounts can damage and disrupt the balance in nature. Today, more attention is being paid to the production and use of biodegradable materials. However, if it is not possible to achive biodegradation with the materials used, it is important to find economically and environmentally sound disposal methods for the polymer waste that can not be degraded on its own. Polystyrene is one of the most consumed and commonly used polymer materials and is therefore a large source of waste. This paper describes polystyrene waste management, from collection to possible ways of recycling. The great advantage is that polystyrene can be recycled by various processes: mechanical, chemical and energy recycling. The aim of this paper is to describe the appropriate methods of polystyrene waste management, possible recycling methods and the application of recycled products, which contribute to sustainable development, environmental protection and economic profit. Recycled polystyrene can be used as a packaging foam for product protection, as a filler and as a substitute for wood – for houses building or making furniture. There is also its interesting use as a sorbent that adsorbs molecules of various substances from various media. Furthermore, recycled polystyrene is also used as an insulation material and as a raw material for the production of some new polymer materials, e.g. composites.
