Abstract

Cilj ovog rada bio je prikazati rješavanje problema najosnovnijih ljudskih potreba kao što su nedostatak pitke vode i električne energije. Takvi problemi pogađaju najčešće dvije vrste zajednica: prenapučene nerazvijene zemlje, i male udaljene zajednice kao što su primjerice udaljeni i rijetko naseljeni otoci s nedostatnom infrastrukturom. Uz nedostatak klasične infrastrukture kao što su vodovodna i strujna mreža, glavne prepreke su siromaštvo, udaljenost od naseljenijih mjesta, nerazvijenost itd. U radu su definirana dva glavna procesa kojim se dolazi do pitke vode, a to su desalinacija i obrada otpadne vode za reupotrebu. Obrazložene su njihove prednosti i mane. Budući da je naglasak rada na naprednim metodama opskrbe vode u udaljenim zajednicama, detaljnije je opisano kako se membranskim tehnologijama, u kombinaciji sa obnovljivim izvorima energije, može bitno pridonijeti ublažavanju ovih problema. Fokus je bio na najpoznatijim i najzastupljenijim tehnologijama: reverznoj osmozi, elektrodijalizi i membranskoj destilaciji. Od svih obnovljivih izvora energije, solarna se nameće kao najprikladnija iz više razloga: siguran je izvor energije, najmanje štetna za okoliš, lako se konvertira u električnu i termalnu energiju. U okviru membranskih tehnologija, najzastupljeniji solarni uređaji su fotonaponske ćelije i solarni kolektori. Kao i svi drugi tipovi tehnologije, membranske tehnologije također imaju nedostatke. Na nekoliko prikazanih primjera u Hrvatskoj dolazi se do zaključka da su membranske tehnologije (pokretane solarnom energijom ili nekim drugim izvorom) još uvijek relativno skupe, kompleksne i slabo zastupljene te zahtijevaju često složenu predobradu i precizno održavanje. Budući da znanost napreduje svakim danom sve više, vjerojatno će se uskoro pronaći novi materijali, nove tehnike i nova saznanja kojima će se olakšati navedene nedaće, često uzimane zdravo za gotovo.

Abstract (english)

The aim of this paper was to address the problems of the most basic human needs such as the lack of potable water and electricity. Such problems are most commonly encountered by two types of communities: underdeveloped overcrowded countries, and remote communities such as remote and sparsely populated islands with insufficient infrastructure. Along with the lack of classical infrastructure such as water supply and electricity grid, the main obstacles are poverty, distance from more populated areas, underdevelopment, etc. Two major processes of drinking water, namely desalination and treatment of waste water for reuptake, are defined. Their advantages and disadvantages are explained. Because of the emphasis on advanced water supply methods in remote communities, more detail is described how membrane technologies, combined with renewable energy sources, can significantly contribute to alleviating these problems. The focus was on the most famous and most widely used technologies: reverse osmosis, electrodialysis and membrane distillation. Of all the renewable energy sources, solar is imposed as the most suitable for several reasons: it is a safe source of energy, the least harmful to the environment, it is easily converted into electrical and thermal energy. Within the membrane technology, the most prominent solar devices are photovoltaic cells and solar collectors. Like all other types of technology, membrane technology also has shortcomings. In a number of examples illustrated in Croatia, it is concluded that membrane technology (driven by solar energy or some other source) is still relatively expensive, complex and poorly represented, and requires frequent prefabrication and precision maintenance. As science is progressing every day more and more, it is likely to soon find new materials, new techniques, and new findings that will alleviate these difficulties, often taken for granted.
