Abstract

Kontaminanti koji stvaraju zabrinutost su spojevi koji se u širokoj primjeni koriste u ljudskoj i veterinarskoj medicini, a također se smatraju „novim zagađivalima“ zbog povećanog ispuštanja u okoliš i otpadne vode tijekom posljednjih desetljeća. Zbog njihovog negativnog utjecaja na okoliš i zdravlje sve se veća pozornost pridaje tehnologijama uklanjanja takvih kontaminanata iz okoliša. Jedna od takvih tehnologija je upotreba membranskih separacijskih procesa koja je i korištena u ovom radu. Tlačni membranski procesi reverne osmoze (RO) i nanofiltracije (NF) korišteni su u ovom radu pri ispitivanju matica modelne otopine poznatog sastava i vodovodne vode na uklanjanje ispitivanih antibiotika – ciprofloksacina i sulfametoksazola. Korištene XLE i NF90 membrane pokazale su se najuspješnijima za uklanjanje antibiotika s faktorom zadržavanja > 90 % u većini slučajeva kod obje membrane za obje matice vode. Nešto lošiji rezultati, ali i dalje uspješni, dobiveni su upotrebom NF membrane čiji je faktor zadržavanja > 88 %, što je rezultat većih pora od ostalih ispitivanih membrana koja posljedično tome pokazuje slabije uklanjanje antibiotika. Različita molekulska masa ciprofloksacina i sulfametoksazola utjecala je na rezultate faktora zadržavanja na taj način da je ciprofloksacin pokazao bolje zadržavanje na membranama jer je veća molekula i teže prolazi kroz pore membrana. Dobiveni rezultati pokazali su da je efekt prosijavanja dominantan mehanizam separacije.

Abstract (english)

Contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) are widely used substances in human and veterinary medicine that are also considered "emerging contaminants" due to their increasing release into the environment and wastewater in recent decades. Due to their negative impact on the environment and health, increasing attention is being focused on technologies to remove such contaminants from the environment. One such technology is the use of membrane separation processes, which were applied in this study. In this study, pressure-driven membrane processes such as reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) were used to examine model solutions of known composition and tap water for the removal of the targeted antibiotics – ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole. The XLE and NF90 membranes used in this study proved to be the most effective for antibiotic removal, achieving a retention factor of more than 90% for both membranes and for both water matrices in most cases. Slightly lower, but still successful results were obtained with the NF membrane, which had a retention factor of over 88%. This can be attributed to the larger pore size compared to the other membranes tested, resulting in a slightly lower removal of antibiotics. The different molecular mass of ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole influenced the retention results, with ciprofloxacin showing better retention on the membranes due to its larger molecular mass, making it more difficult to pass through the membrane pores. The results obtained indicated that size exclusion was the predominant separation mechanism.
