Abstract

Ljudi svakodnevno postaju sve više izloženi tvarima koje štetno utječu na njihovo zdravlje, a isto tako i na okoliš. Pojedine tvari koje se koriste u industriji namještaja, dječjim igračkama, automobilima, proizvodima za osobnu njegu i plastičnim ambalažama loše utječu na čovjekov hormonalni sustav te bi ih bilo poželjno izbaciti iz upotrebe. U ovom radu naglasak je stavljen na skupini kemijskih spojeva, poznatu pod nazivom ftalati. Ftalati su esteri ftalne kiseline i alifatskih alkohola. To su hlapljive tekućine koje se dodaju plastičnim polimerima zbog povećanja njihove pokretljivosti prilikom proizvodnje te zbog povećavanja fleksibilnosti gotovog proizvoda. Odnosno, ftalati su aditivi poznati kao plastifikatori ili omekšavala. To ujedno znači i da se nalaze u gotovo svim proizvodima što nas okružuju. Studije provedene posljednjih godina pokazuju da tvari iz skupine ftalata štete plodnosti, a povezuje ih se i sa sve većim porastom oboljenja kod djece, uključujući čak i karcinom. Kako bi se navedeni problemi izbjegli, koriste se različite metode kojima bi se ftalati uklonili iz okoliša. Time se ujedno želi smanjiti ljudski kontakt s tim štetnim supstancama. Cilj ovog rada je dati pregled štetnih i toksičnih utjecaja ftalata prisutnih u okolišu na sam okoliš te posljedično na zdravlje ljudi.

Abstract (english)

Nowadays, people are becoming increasingly exposed to substances that have adverse effects on their health, as well as on the environment. Certain substances used in furniture industry, children's toys, cars, personal care products and plastic packaging have negative effects on human hormonal system. Therefore, there is a growing desire to put them out of use. In this paper, the emphasis has been put on the group of chemical substances known as phthalates. Phthalates are esters of phthalic acid and aliphatic alcohols. They are volatile liquids that are added to plastic polymers in order to increase their mobility during plastic manufacturing, as well as to enhance final products flexibility. That is, they are called plasticizers or softeners. It also means that they are in almost everything that surrounds us. Recently conducted studies show that chemicals from the phthalate group harm fertility and are associated with an increasing number of diseases in children, including cancer. In order to avoid these problems, various methods are used in order to remove phthalates from the environment. The main objective of that is keeping people in contact with these harmful substances as rarely as possible. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the harmful and toxic effects of phthalates present in the environment on human health and the environment itself.
