Abstract

Humani lijekovi uslijed proizvodnih procesa, stalno pronalaze svoje mjesto u okolišu, uglavnom kao rezultat istih, ili uslijed neprikladnog odlaganja neiskorištenih ili zastarjelih proizvoda te putem izlučevina organizama. Zbog svojih fizikalno-kemijskih svojstava, mnoge od tih tvari ili njihovih bioaktivnih metabolita, mogu završiti u tlu, sedimentu kao i u vodi, gdje akumulacijom izazivaju neželjene učinke kod kopnenih ili vodenih organizama. Farmaceutici su otkriveni u različitim ekološkim sredinama diljem svijeta; u otpadnim vodama postrojenja za obradu otpadnih vodam te u površinskim, podzemnim i pitkim vodama. Farmaceutski spoj memantin, odobren je u Europi i SAD u svrhu liječenja umjerene do teške demencije uzrokovane Alzheimerovom bolešću. Koristi se također i u liječenju Parkinsonove bolesti u ranim stadijima bolesti. Fizikalno-kemijska svojstva memantina ukazuju na njegovu izrazitu sklonost bioakumulaciji. Budući da konvencionalni sustavi za pročišćavanje otpadnih voda nisu u potpunosti učinkoviti pri uklanjanju memantina, potrebno je razviti nove tehnologije koje mogu u potpunosti ukloniti ili uništiti njegovu biološku aktivnost. Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je procijeniti mogućnost naprednih oksidacijskih procesa, konkretno fotooksidativnog procesa UV-C/H2O2 za tretiranje modelne otpadne vode koja sadrži memantin hidroklorid otopljen u vodi. Ispitan je utjecaj pH i koncentracije H2O2 na brzinu razgradnje memantina, korištenjem punog faktorskog plana i metode odzivnih površina. Kinetika razgradnje memantina opisana je modelom prvoga reda te razvijenim RSM modelom u kojemu su pH i koncentracija H2O2 utvrđeni značajnima za učinkovitost razgradnje memantina.

Abstract (english)

Human medicines are constantly finding their place in the environment due to production processes, mainly as a result thereof, or by inadequate disposal of unused or obsolete products and metabolitic secretions. Due to their physico-chemical properties, many of these substances or their bioactive metabolites, may end up in soil, sediments and water, where accumulation might cause adverse effects in terrestrial or aquatic organisms. Pharmaceuticals have been detected in different environment matrices worldwide; in wastewater treatmentplant effluents, surface, ground and drinking waters. The pharmaceutical compound memantine is approved in Europe and the United States for treatment of moderate to severe dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease. It is also used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease as a medicament in the treatment of early stages. Physico-chemical properties of memantine indicate that it is a potentially persistent micropollutant. Because conventional purification systems are not fully effective for removal of memantine, it is necessary to develop new technologies that can completely remove or destroy its biological activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibilities of advanced oxidation processes, especially photooxidative process UV-C/H2O2 model for treating model wastewater containing memantine dissolved in water. The influence of key operating parameters of applied photooxidative processes (pH and concentration of oxidant) were investigated using the combination of full factorial experimental design. The influence of pH and concentracion of H2O2 on the kinetics of memantine degradation were experimentally evaluated. Degradation of memantine obeys first-order kinetics, which was accurately modeled by the developed RSM model which takes into account the pH and concentration of H2O2.
